Do you like great seafood and excellent steaks? How about the best of both served up with Southern hospitality and amazing interpretations of Creole cuisine? If that sounds good, then you won’t be disappointed with a visit to Brennan’s of Houston! Going to Brennan’s is a memorable experience. Opened in 1967 – and winner of a treasure trove of awards - Brennan’s regularly rates at the top of the list of Houston’s best restaurants.
Complete with chandeliers, high back chairs and crisp table cloths, Brennan’s represents the nicest of fine dining. There is a dress code – business casual; although you may want to dress up for a special occasion. The service is impeccable. From the moment you are seated you will find yourself flanked by an array of friendly servers ready to fulfill your every wish. You will even find a knowledgeable “wine guy” who is happy to assist your choice of vino and successfully pair it with your meal. With a stock of over 800 bottles there is a wide variety to choose from – and amazingly there are upwards of 80 options by the glass!
Whether you are there to grab a lunch martini at the Courtyard Bar, for a special event in their ballroom, or a romantic dinner, you certainly will find something to satisfy. The Courtyard Bar is classy, well stocked, and intimate. There is also the option of going out to the patio, where you will be able to imbibe while eating Brennan’s Blue Crab & Caviar Nachos or Creole Wood Grilled Octopus beneath two oak trees on wrought iron furniture beside a bubbling fountain.
For lunch you can try selections like Creole Roasted Chicken, Crispy Louisiana Catfish, or Chicory Coffee Grilled Pork Tenderloin. You can’t go wrong with one of their Iced Seafood Platters, featuring delights like Blue Crab Ravigote, Zatarain’s Boiled Jumbo Shrimp, Creole Lobster “On a Stick,” West Indies Crab Claws, or Des Allemands Smoked Catfish Dip. Appetizers include Texas Tomato Salad, Louisiana Crawfish Enchilada, or even Louisiana Frog Legs Almandine. These goodies are also available on the dinner menu.
I like ordering a variety of things off the menu and one of the best ways to start is with their freshly shucked Gulf Oysters. They taste as if they are fresh off the dock. And don’t miss out on their soup. Brennan’s is known for their Turtle Soup Au Sherry and their Texas Creole Seafood Gumbo is outstanding.
The dinner menu has something for every taste. The Pecan Crusted Gulf Fish melts in your mouth. If you want a sampling of seafood, one of my favorites is the ample Gulf Fish Pontchartrain. It comes with Jumbo Lump Crab, J & J Shrimp, and Matagorda oysters – complete with fire roasted mushroom rice and Brennan's Creole butter. If you interested in a crab specialty, try their Crispy Louisiana Softshell Crab. If you are in the mood for meat, the Harris Ranch Filet Mignon is delicious and done to perfection. Another one of Brennan’s innovations is the Mint Julep Grilled Colorado Lamb Chops, which will delight your senses.
When it comes to ordering the sides, don’t be shy. For example, the Bacon Braised Collard and Mustard Greensare out of this world. Also, the Atchafalaya Crawfish Mac & Cheese is one of my favorites, and I love the Beaucoup Roasted Mushrooms. There are also good Vegetarian selections for those so inclined.
If you decide you want to go out for Brunch on Saturdays, Brennan’s has you covered. There’s nothing like a Bloody Mary, Brandy Milk Punch, Ramos Gin Fizz, or Bourbon Eggnog to get you going Saturday morning. Brennan’s offers a brunch package wherein you can mix and match off their menu to design one’s own brunch, which includes an Appetizer, Entrée, and Dessert. Brennan’s also offers 25-Cent Mimosas & Bloody Marys – limit of three (would one need any more?). I really like their Shrimp and Grits – goat cheese stone ground grits, with marinated sweet peppers, mirlitons, toasted garlic and sun dried tomatoes. Their Atchafalaya Crawfish Cakes are great, too – and come with Louisiana Crawfish Tails, Poached Eggs, Charred Peppers and Oak Hollow Tomato Creole Sauce.
Anyone you take out to this restaurant is going to be very pleased with the ambience, the service, and the high quality of the food. The ambience, excellent service, and variety, innovativeness, and quality of food at Brennan’s of Houston makes for a world-class restaurant and a wonderful dining experience. As a classy place for a business luncheon, family reunion, reception, or place to go on a date, Brennan’s is right at the top of places anyone should pick.
And as you leave, don’t forget to try a couple of the Pralines presented near the door. A perfect way to end a perfect dining experience.
